Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has made it an electoral priority to double the number of Scottish MPs in two elections, and has singled out East Lothian as a key target seat. Speaking at the Scottish Liberal Democrat Conference in Aviemore Mr Clegg said "Labour is the present fading into the past, and the Liberal Democrats are the party of Scotland's tomorrow."
In his key note speech to Conference Mr Clegg pointed to Amy Rodger, East Lothian's Liberal Democrat challenger, as having what it takes to break Labour's grip on the constituency. Mr Clegg said, "Today, Scottish Labour is a party paralysed by indecision, uncertainty and drift. They have run out of ideas and run out of steam. When I look at Gordon Brown and Wendy Alexander I see the present fading into the past."
He continued, "We already have great candidates in winnable seats. Fred Mackintosh in Edinburgh South, Kevin Lang in Edinburgh North, Amy Rodger in East Lothian and more besides. These are young talents with real vigour and fresh ideas."
Amy Rodger commented, "Nick has ambitious plans for the Party. Doubling the number of MPs the Liberal Democrats send to Westminster within two elections is a challenging, but exciting prospect. I want to do my bit and win East Lothian at the next General Election, to give East Lothian voters the quality representation they deserve, because Labour has been taking East Lothian for granted for too long."
