Labour's abolition of the 10p tax band will hit the lowest paid across East Lothian, hurting those who can least afford it. This is the view of local Liberal Democrat Campaigner Amy Rodger.
Under Gordon Brown's unpopular plan, the lowest paid will see their taxes DOUBLE from 10p to 20p in the pound. This will hit low paid workers of all ages. A family with children in which both parents work and have a combined income of £8000 will lose £446 per year, while a retiree with a taxable pension of £8000 would lose £232.
Amy Rodger, the main challenger to Labour at the next General Election, said, "Labour has made a mess of the economy and are trying to make the lowest paid pay for it. This is a disgraceful betrayal of the less well off in our communities."
"With the cost of living soaring, the cost of petrol continuing to rise and years of stealth taxes to contend with, Gordon Brown has chosen this moment to impose a huge tax hike on people who are already struggling to earn a living wage."
"The Liberal Democrats are leading the fight against this unfair tax rise, and I'm calling on our Labour MP to do the right thing, stand up for her constituents and vote against it in Parliament. I will be watching with interest."
