Cllr Jacquie Bell was saddened to return from holiday this week to find that the Labour Government has decided that West Barns Post Office should close.
The service offered by Mrs Harding at West Barns has been excellent.
The need for a post office at West Barns was shown when following closure some years ago the service was reopened in part of Mrs Harding's home. The service is important for West Barns village as the bus service to other post offices in Dunbar and East Linton is serviced by buses that are not easy for older people and those with disabilities to board. Mrs Harding has excellent knowledge of her customers. The Post Office is of social importance.
The Labour Government has continued the Conservative Government path in eroding the services provided by the Post Office. It is noted that our local MP, along with hundreds of her colleagues, voted for closures when she could have stopped them. Our local MSP, intending Labour Party leader, has previously advised post office staff that it is a Westminster matter.
I will support the continuation of West Barns Post Office. It is hoped to have a public meeting shortly.
There is now a period of public consultation. Views are needed by 29th September.
