Amy Rodger, Liberal Democrat candidate for East Lothian, has congratulated Shetland MSP, Tavish Scott, on winning the contest to lead the Scottish Liberal Democrats with almost 60% of first preference votes.
Appearing from the players' tunnel in Murrayfield Stadium yesterday, Tavish was cheered by MSPs, MPs, candidates and party activists.
Tavish Scott MSP said: "This is the gold medal in the Lib Dem Olympics. Under my leadership, Team Lib Dem - Scottish MP's, MSP's, MEP's and councillors across the country will work together to build a stronger party, a stronger Scotland, and yes a stronger UK.
"I am clear in my mind about the challenge ahead and the opportunities that this challenge presents. The tectonic plates of Scottish politics really are shifting. When they stop I am determined that the Liberal Democrats will be a dominant presence on the political landscape."
Amy said: "Tavish Scott has won a clear mandate to take the Scottish Liberal Democrats forward to renewed electoral success. Tavish will show Labour to be the tired party of the past, fading into the distance. He will tackle the hollowness of SNP polices head on, exposing the shallow, headline grabbing approach they have taken since May."
She added: "Most importantly, Tavish will energise Liberal Democrats in Scotland, giving us a new direction and drive. I will be working closely with Tavish to that end, and i hope to see him in East Lothian in the near future."
South of Scotland Liberal Democrat MSP Jim Hume said: "Labour is in meltdown and the Tories are propping up the SNP with an unholy alliance that's grown ever stronger since the 2007 elections.
"With a new leader firmly in place after a resounding victory, Scottish Liberal Democrats stand well placed to continue to carve out a future as the only effective opposition party in Holyrood.
"Scottish Liberal Democrats will call the Scottish Government to account at every step and stand up for the people of Scotland on issues of real importance - a genuine antidote to the SNP's empty and populist grandstanding.
"This is our time."
