Dunbar and East Linton Councillor, Jacquie Bell, joined other East Lothian members at the Federal Spring Conference in Harrogate.
Members attended a variety of debates and other events. The hall was packed to hear Vince Cable the economic spokesperson and Howard Dean a US Democrat instrumental in the success of the Obama campaign. Leader Nick Clegg noted the party had been at the forefront of awareness of the recession before it happened and that urgent measures were needed to tackle it including the end of big bank staff bonuses.
Jacquie spoke in an emergency debate on the Post Office/Royal Mail. She spoke of the local efforts to save West Barns Post Office by the Lib Dem/SNP Councillors whilst local Labour, including the MP and MSP had stood by - only complaining after the office had closed. She also noted the continued national efforts e.g. to retain the Post Office Card account where Labour MPs had voted against or not turned up at the debate before U turning and claiming all the credit for continuing the contract.
