Cllr Jacquie Bell
I refer to the letter from Karen Murphy, Office Manager for Anne Moffat MP in which she says I was "wrong" in my letter related to the use of House of Commons Postpaid envelopes to send standard "Dear Constituent" mailings on the continuation of the Post Office Card Account.
In early November 2008 I had published a letter noting Labour's U turn on the future of the Post Office Card Account.
I subsequently had contact from East Lothian residents who had received letters from Anne Moffat in Postpaid envelopes heralding the continuation of the Card Account. Unlike what Ms Murphy says these residents had not contacted the MP as part of the Telecommunications Union campaign on the Card Account. Rather they had been in contact with her months earlier on another matter relating to their local Post Office.
I wrote to Jill Pay the Serjeant of Arms enclosing a sample of the letter with its Postpaid envelope. She passed the letter on to James Robertson, the Director of Accommodation Services.
Mr Robertson wrote to me on 26/2/09 to say that Ms Moffat had been in contact with his office to let him know that a number of envelopes had been used in error to send out these mailings. He said that Ms Moffat had agreed to reimburse the House of the costs incurred and that he would write and let me know once the reimbursement was received.
Perhaps Ms Murphy and the constituency office need to double check their mailing lists before other residents receive mailings on matters different to that on which they have contacted their MP in Postpaid envelopes at the Taxpayers expense.
