Dunbar and East Linton Councillor, Jacquie Bell, attended the recent Scottish Liberal Democrat Conference in Perth.
Jacquie took opportunity to take part in debates and other activities as well as hear from the UKs political economic expert and Lib Dem deputy Leader, Vince Cable. At an auction Jacquie bought the framed notes for Vince's speech.
Jacquie asked questions of Ming Campbell on the UK withdrawal from Iraq - an interest as her son is currently based in Basra and will be one of the last RAF members out of the area. She took part in a debate on loans for those on low income noting the high interest charged by some lenders and the need for increased support for CABx and credit unions. She took part in a new policy session on the introduction of new systems for Home Care in her day job at City of Edinburgh which she suggested should be rolled out across Scotland. She chaired a Fringe event on assisted suicide. Jacquie also raised with party president Ros Scott and Health spokesman, Ross Finnie the difficulties of the new Attendance Allowance form which is very complex and intrusive and the use of expensive 084 numbers to contact a number of service providers e.g in Health and Department of Work and Pensions. Baroness Scott agreed that Parliamentary questions should be asked as those most vulnerable and on low incomes are being charged the highest rates to make essential contacts.
Conference also pledged to support the demand for the opt out from the European Working Time Directive for retained firefighters.
