Nick Clegg Supporting the Gurkhas
Dear Sir
Gurkhas
For hundreds of years the Gurkhas have been an integral part of our UK forces. Many of their number have won acclamation for their service including the VC.
Gurkhas are a recognised part of the UK militia - they were often seen as shoppers in the market place in Richmond (Yorkshire) when I stood there in 2005. They are regulars at Redford Barracks in Edinburgh.
There have been rights to settle for those who have retired since 1997 when their base in Hong Kong became Chinese. However, rights for those who fought before then are disputed.
There are current disputes about the rights of the Gurkhas across the UK.
New rights to settle include a right for those with 20 years service - and yet the majority of men can only serve a maximum of 15 years. The rights of the legislation are given to only a few officers.
It is recognised that the situation in Nepal is less stable than when the Gurkhas were first in operation.
These men are an important part of the operation of our UK forces.
The Liberal Democrats are supporting the rights of Gurkha troops.
There will be an Opposition Day debate on Wednesday 29th April on the situation.
I challenge Anne Moffat MP to attend and vote for the Lib Dem motion
Yours sincerely
Cllr Jacquie Bell (Mrs )
