SNP-TORY 'UNHOLY ALLIANCE' STOPS BUSINESS RATES RELIEF SCHEME

March 20, 2010 8:00 AM

Jim Hume, Liberal Democrat MSP for the South of Scotland, has hit out at the unholy alliance between the SNP and Conservatives when both parties' MSPs voted down a transitional rates relief scheme to help Scottish hotels affected by rates increases.

The Liberal Democrats revealed that business rates for many Scottish hotels are set to rise by tens of thousands of pounds on 1st April this year.

"Whilst hotels England and Wales are being helped by the UK Government's transitional relief scheme, Scottish hotels and other businesses that are in need of help will be left with no assistance from the Scottish Government, said Jim Hume.

"Many businesses are already struggling as a result of the economic downturn. Now the Scottish Government has chosen to hit hotels with the full increase in just one year.

"I am extremely worried that without a transition scheme like that introduced in England and Wales, which brings the changes in slowly, Scottish businesses will be put at a competitive disadvantage."
